Varicose Veins

About 15 percent of all American adults eventually develop varicose veins.

Varicose veins are one of the most common problems of blood vessels.

What are Varicose Veins?

A vein is a blood vessel that carries blood low in oxygen content from the body to the lungs and heart.  It is a normal part of the circulatory system.

Varicose veins are abnormally and irregularly swollen veins (the blood vessels that return blood to the heart from the body tissues).

The varicose veins run downwards from the thighs to ankles near the surface of the leg.

Varicose veins develop slowly, but once they start they progress.  They do not get better on their own.

Causes of Varicose Veins
  • Weakened vein walls
  • Valve failure
  • Vein damage
Pregnancy is not the cause, but varicose veins can develop or worsen during pregnancy.  This is due to increased pressure from the uterus on the pelvic and leg veins, increased blood volume and changing hormones.

Varicose veins on the surface of your legs are usually not associated with dangerous blood clots that can travel to your heart or lungs and cause an obstruction (embolism).

Any clot that forms near the surface will generally be small.  There may be inflammation, but the clot does not usually seriously threaten your health.  However it is strongly recommended that you make an appointment with your doctor to make sure that there are no clots involving the deep veins.
